SILAS

they/them

I believe in cinema’s ability to explore the real through the unreal. Through fiction, we have the power to connect with others — and maybe even discover some truths about humanity along the way.

My academic background has given me a unique edge: I have a deep knowledge of film canon and respect the responsibility that lies in the cinematographer’s hands. Although my taste is specific, I take pride in my ability to adapt to all manner of stories. While limitations can be frustrating, I’ve found they often, paradoxically, offer the best solutions. What matters most, ultimately, is that the narrative is served.

I’ve spent much of my life moving from place to place — from Philadelphia to Munich, the UK, and more — which has exposed me to a rich breadth of perspectives, languages, and cultures. I take this appreciation of diversity with me in my creative endeavors.

Currently, I’m spending most of my time as a cinematography fellow of the American Film Institute.
